Lime mint lemonade
Lovely refreshing summers drink that is very easy to make. You can either use shop bought mint to make the lime mint lemonade, but homegrown fresh mint will add even more flavour.
- A very refreshing & fruity drink
- That is very easy & quick to make.
- Great poured over ice.
The recipe below is based on the Sudanese Laymoun bil Nana recipe. Below you will find 2 options – how to make the original recipe or how to make a simpler one using your own mint.
Sudanese Cuisine
Lots of different foods and recipes from Sudan are really tempting to make. For example Wikipedia mentions lots of specialised soups and stews. I especially liked the red mincemeat sauce called mullah ahmar, that is eaten with moulded wheat flour rolled in a ball.
But the recipe I will try to make next is a bread similar to a crepe that is eaten with savoury stews.
However the drink that really appealed is this Arabian lemonade – ok I’ve slightly altered it but it’s very refreshing and very simple to make.
How to make fresh lime mint lemonade
Ingredients:
- 1 cup lime mint leaves
- 100 g sugar – ideally cane (muscovado)
- 1 litre fresh water
- 1 lime – optional (see note below)
Equipment
- 1 blender
- 1 jug & sieve
Instructions
1. Prepare the mint
- Remove the leaves from the stems
3. Make the lemonade
- Put the sugar and mint leaves into the blender.
- Add water until it reaches the 1 litres mark.
- Blend until the sugar has dissolved and the water has turned green.
4. Finalise
- Pour the lemonade through a sieve into a jug.
- Then put some ice cubes into a glass and pour the lemonade on top
- Enjoy
Option 2 – Laymoun bil Nana (using mint & 1 lime)
In this recipe I have used lime mint – however the original recipe uses 1 lime and regular mint.
To do it the authentic way you will also need 1 lime
Try to use biological or non waxed lime, as you will use the skin. First stage is to wash the lime so that it is clean.
Then cut the lime into half and then again and again so you have small pieces.
- You can either simply put it in the blender,
- or alternatively squeeze and rub it in the sugar and leave for 10 minutes or so. So that you have a sort of syrup. (not essential).
Two items that make a difference
Firstly – the sugar you use
In the recipe I have suggested using cane sugar. Simple reason is that it will add extra flavour to the lemonade.
However the sugar you use will also change the colour of the lemonade. Granulated sugar will give it a light green colour. Whereas cane sugar will give it a very much darker green colour.
Secondly – the mint you use.
If you make it using lime mint then it will give a much more ‘smoother’ flavour.
It is very easy to grow at home and you can also use it in other recipes – like Mojito, savoury sauces, etc. (How to grow lime mint at home)
The picture on the right shows how fast it has grown in only 2 months.
On the other hand if you make it the authentic way (using a lime) then you can experiment with different types of mint. The product summary below will give you more details as to the type of flavour.
