Oregano
There are many different oregano varieties. Sometimes oregano is also called wild marjoram. The key is to realise that the flavours between the 2 are completely different.
The difference between oregano and marjoram
Sweet marjoram is one of the most popular herbs in European cooking. It has a fairly delicate flavour which makes it ideal for salads. But it’s main use is when used in recipes containing meat, poultry as well as some vegetables like carrots or cucumber. If shopping you will usually find it in the dried herb section.
Wild marjoram (Oregano) will have a much more pungent flavour and is very popular in Mediterranean dishes (Italian, Greek, etc.). Especially pasta dishes, pizza sauces and tomato dishes. Oregano can also be found in the dried herb section, but in addition you might also find it with the fresh herbs.
Please note then when dried both varieties will become much stronger in flavour and you will need to use less in recipes.
Different oregano varieties
There are many different types, each with a different flavour and recipe uses.
For example above are links to
- The popular Greek oregano – which is the one used most often in recipes, and easily available in shops as an ingredient. (But great for growing at home)
- Oregano hot and spicy – very similar to the one above, but in addition adds real heat to meals
In addition there is also Syrian oregano (with a minty flavour), Cuban oregano, etc. We will be adding more over time.
